Research Notes

  • Research note 01: The first BENNETT Chr to show up in the Sturminster Newton (St Mary's) PR in the Dorset FHS records on ancestry is Jane's 1797..
  • Research note 02: Possibly Philip the son of Philip BENNETT Chr in Shaftsbury 14th August 1768. Many other children with a father Philip BENNETT at around the same time. There is a marriage in Shaftsbury between Philip BENNET and Sarah COLBRON in Shaftsbury 1761. A Philip BENNET is buried in Holy Trinity, Shaftsbury in 1823 aged 89 (making YOB 1734), and a Sarah BENNET in 1821 aged 83 (making YOB 1738)
    * The elder Philip (as above) was most likely the child Chr in Shaftsbury 1735, the son of Walter.
    * There are 35 BENNETT people in Shaftsbury in 1841 census.
Background information on Sturminster Newton Castle, Dorset, England, - Sturminster Newton stands on the River Stour between Blandford and Sherborne. Often called Sturminster Newton Castle in older documents 'castle' refers to the ruins on a 14th century castle on high ground to the south of the present bridge. The famous cattle market closed down in 1997 has recently been redeveloped and a market, though no longer for livestock still takes place every Monday.

The town has strong literary links; the poet William Barnes was born in nearby Bagber and educated in Sturminster Newton. Thomas Hardy lived in a house which is situated by the recreation ground, he spent two years in the town during which time he wrote 'The Return of the Native'.8
