Research Notes

  • Research note 01: An Andrew BLAKE born 1731 and died 25th Dec 1791 aged 60 is buried in Sibton. His wife Mary is buried with him. She was born in 1731 and died 27th Nov 1778 aged 48..
  • Research note 02: I found a John BLAKE born in Bacton in 1771 in Rootsweb's world connect. His parents are William BLAKE and Mary nee LUMMIS. Following William up the BLAKE surname tree (as it appears on Rootsweb) we have -
Parents - Robert BLAKE (1707 Bacton) and Susan nee CROSBY
GParents - Andrew BLAKE (1667 Westhorpe) and Elizabeth nee HUNT
GG - Andrew BLAKE (1630 Wickham) and Mary nee RODWELL
Gx3 - Andrew BLAKE (1596 Cotton) and Francis WALKER
Gx4 - John BLAKE (1553 Cotton) and Margaret nee DENCH
Gx5 - Andrew BLAKE (1510) Cotton) and Elizabeth nee LOFT
    Gx6 - Robert BLAKE (1475) and Eleanor
    Gx7 - John BLAKE (1430) and Agnes
    Gx8 - Richard (1405)
    Gx9 - John (1380)

  • Research note 03: We can deduce the famly's movements from births and deaths. They lived in Sibton until 1802. Then thay next appear in Kelsale in 1811, where Damaris was christened, and Esther was christened and buried. The 2 villiages are less than 3 miles apart, to the north of Saxmundham. As there is a break of 9 years in births, I checked Family Search, which is far from complete for Suffolk, and no christenings turned up. We can say that no children were born between 1802 and 1811 who died in Kelsale after 1811, but of course 4 or more could have been who died where they were born, or who lived to adulthood..
  • Research note 04: Burials of BLAKEs in Sibton (coverage in NBI is 1552-1900) are: Andrew b1731 d 1791, Elizabeth d 1770, Emma b 1807 d 1807, Mary d 1778, Robert b 1764 d 1789, Susan d 1773, Susannah d 1771, William b 1766 d 1792. Now George and (possibly) William were born after 1800 and the only death in the list above is Emma who died as an infant, so none of these people are George and William's parent.

And a stroke of luck some lovely person has put onto their web site all the readabel headstones from the Sibton churchyard. We now know that Andrew was 60 when he died 25th Dec 1791, and his wife Mary died 27th Nov 1778 aged 48. There are no other mentions of BLAKE.

There is a Robert BLAKE aged 25 (b1764) and A William BLAKE aged 26 (B 1766) in the NBI in Sibton.

There is also a Sarah BLAKE age unknown who was buried in Sibton 1769, and a Susannah in 1771.
  • Research note 05: The Sibton Parish Registers go as far back as 1557, and are availble from the Suffolk Record's Office. The Land Tax assesments 1782-1823 are there as well.
  • Research note 06: There is another alternative re John's birthplace and parents. This would be less likely than Andrew being his father would, but I would be wrong if I did not spell out the possibility.
    * This John was born in 1760, and he does not appear in the records until 1794, living in Sibton and marrying in Mendham. Another John BLAKE in my data was born in 1760 in Essex. This man married in Essex and had at least 3 children, the last one born in 1787 in Great Bardfield. However, this option fizzled out as there are lots of records of John the baker of Great Bardfield after 1794, meaning he could not have been in Sibton and Great Bardfield at the same time..
