Primary events

Secondary circumstances

  • (Witness) EmigratAU: Eliza Ball was with Thomas Cannum Ball and Elizabeth Jane Lester when they emigrated to Australia on 4 December 1837 from England; The Port they arrived at was Adelaide. This ship was very small, much smaller than those ships in the first fleet, so there is a good chance this was a privately arranged journey and records may exist in UK archives.4
  • Married Name: Her married name was Smith.

Research Notes

  • Research note 01: I believe James had a sister named Eleanor Culley SMITH, who was born in Budle House, Northumberland, England 20th March 1811. She married William M PINKERTON in Glendale, Northumberland, England on 23th Jan 1838. This family migrated to Adelaide in the same year, and must have remained in Australia for some time before moving to USA. All the PINKERTON children were born in Australia (and most likely all in Adelaide), the last one in 1848. 2 of these children died in USA and another 2 in New Zealand, so possibly the family moved from South Australia to New Zealand then on to USA. Now need to find out how many of the SMITH family also migrated? At least 2 of James' brothers died in Australia

Eleanor died on 27th May 1891 in Wagon Mound, Mora, New Mexico. A couple of photos are attached..
  • Research note 02: An Eliza BALL married a James Culley SMITH. This Eliza died in Dubbo in 1897. I believe that this is the Eliza who is the daughter of Thomas who was counted in the census, and once I found the children who are all recorded as LDS member submissions, but with actual dates so they appear as results of careful investigations, I decided to enter the details of this Eliza into the database. As always, we will need to confirm, possibly from Eliza's death certificate.

Not sure who the Eliza BALL is who died in 1868, but could be married to one of the BALL sons..2
