Census details

Some aspects of Elizabeth Aldis's life. Elizabeth was 20 when she married the 62 year old Anthony. Anthony's first wife died in July 1797, and he married Elizabeth in May 1798. Their first born child arrived in August 1798, therefore Elizabeth was some 6 months pregnant at the time of her marriage, but this pregnancy did NOT occur prior to Anthony's first wife's death.

The Shottisham Parish Register is interesting to say the least.

Anthony and Elizabeth married in Norwich, where it appears they had moved to (the were both OF THE PARISH). However, I doubt that Anthony would have left his substantial farm in Shotesham, so it looks as if this was an 'address of convenience'. They appear to have left the village simply to marry, which implies some secrecy.

In 1798 Anthony's children from his first marriage were aged from 12 down to 7, but note that I have never found any records other than Chr for any of them. It is possibly they were all dead, or all with another relative. None get mentioned in Anthony's will 25 years later.

Anthony was certainly very rich when he died, and he must have been the most substantial farmer in the village.

When John Arthur EVERRETT, the first child of Anthony and Elizabeth, was Christened his Christening was NOT entered into the PR. It was squeezed in some time later. I have read thousands of Norfolk Parish Register entries, and I have never found anything that hints that the Minister would be willing to cover up a pregnancy that began prior to a marriage. In fact, whilst there are many illegitimate births recorded as such to single women and women who have been widowed for years, they seem to be simply considered part of the general life in the village. I have NOT read the Parish Chest entries, which is where you would expect to find notes regarding any investigations into the purported fathers, if any were conducted. More than half the illegitimate births include the family name of the father (usually as the middle name of the child). BUT, in this case I really do suspect that the minister was doing just that. Maybe it was the fact that Elizabeth was so young, when compared to the father of her child.

They had a very productive, and long, marriage. It produced at least 12 children, the last being born 3 years before Anthony died, at the age of 85.

I have sent off a req for advice on getting access to the Parish Chest, but did not get an answer.

In Dec 2016 I found Elizaeth's actual parents (as noted in the Will of her father Walliam ALDIS). I made the change to the database on that day.

Some aspects of Elizabeth Aldis's life. Oh happy days!!! Note written Dec 2016 - William mentions in his will his daughter Elizabeth EVERETT who had 12 children (as at 1826). My Elizabeth EVERETT had 12 children on that date, and her name was ALDIS before she married.

Elizabeth was already a widow by the time her father died. There is an odd legacy to her - if she married again, or 'co-habitated' with any man, then she was to get nothing from the Will, and her share was to be shared between her 12 children. I say odd, as this sort of statement is seen in Will in relation to the widow of the deceased, but I have never seen it applied to a daughter. Remember that Elizabeth is the mother, albeit still quite young having started at the age of 20, of 12 living children.

Witnesses to the Will were Christopher MASON, Henry LOCKE and William CRASKE.12

Estates Planned & Unplanned

Anthony Everett left a will on 15 December 1821 in which Elizabeth Aldis was a beneficiary; Partial transcription of his will. Executors (and guardians of his children then under 21) were his son John Arthur EVERETT and 2 friends. He left 300 pounds to be invested on behalf of his wife Elizabeth for the term of her natural life or until she remarried or co-habited with another man. He left the balance thus: - 100 pounds to each of John Arthur and George Taylor, the lease and management of his farm to John Arthur, and then the total estate, including the valuation of the farming business left to his eldest son who had to pay into the estate the value thereof, left equally between his children in the usual manner. Unfortunately he did not name his children but by my reckoning he had 16 in total, but of course some may have died prior to their father. The youngest would have been 3 when Anthony died. The will was valued for duty at £4,000 which using average wages would be worth £3,190,000 today.

Research Notes

  • Research note 01: I am sure this is our Elizabeth EVERRETT found living as a visitor with Frederick and Hannah BALLS and their children at - Ax Castle, Halesworth. Her place of birth was said to be ????ington, Suffolk. She was a widowed annuitant. Others have transcribed her place of birth as Thorington. This Elizabeth's death was registered either Jun qtr 1854 or Dec qtr 1859 in Blything.
  • Research note 02: Elizabeth widow of William ALDIS of Shotesham aged 86 was buried in Woodton 1st Feb 1782. This couple are the parents of Thomas ALDIS who was baptised 12th Jun 1726

Also a John ALDIS aged 67 who died in Greenwich was buried in Shotesham 21st July 1843.
  • Research note 03: There is more than 1 Elizabeth Everett in the free BDM, but none in Lodden, and none that could be our Elizabeth in free reg for the decade. I have checked the Woodton Parish Register for the decade to eliminate this as a possibility. Nothing found. Of course she may have remarried, but there is no Elizabeth living in Woodton of the right age and born outside Norfolk, and no marriages of Elizabeth EVERRET in Loddon 1841-1861.
  • Research note 04: There was a John ALDIS who was born in Beccles Suffolk in Yarmouth in 1851 census. His wife, Sarah, was born in Yarmouth,as were his 4 children who were with them at the time. There was a Hannah BLAKE, servant, born in Beccles 1815, living with the family. We can look for a will from ALDIS family in Beccles - Most likely courts in order 1. Court of the Archdeaconry of Suffolk 2. Court of the Bishop of Ely (Episcopal Consistory) 3. Court of the Bishop (Episcopal Consistory) of Norwich.
    * sent a req to Suffolk Lookups asking for beccles details. (Mar 2013).
  • Research note 05: An Elizabeth EVERRETT, widow, married Charles BARKER in Beccles 1833. An EVERITT and John and Mary ALDOUS were witnesses. Even though this Elizabeth was of the correct age to be ours, I found her in the 1841 census with her husband, and in the 1851 census also with her husband. 1851 shows her place of birth as Stradbroke, so for the moment I am discounting her as being the widow of Anthony..
