Brushes with the LAW

On 15th September 1830 a Stephen BALDWIN was sentenced to life imprisonment for housebreaking and larceny. He (and many other people) was pardoned later in the same year. The Morning post issue dated 25th reported that he was actually sentenced to death in the New Court (Old Bailey). The Bell's Weekly Messenger dated 8th Nov reports that His Gracious Majesty was pleased 'to respite during his royal pleasure'. NO reason was given, and I have yet to find a 'general background' on Royal pardons in 1830 that I can comprehend. The newspapers give his age as 21, but his prison hulk record has to as 31. The trial was in London, and there were other Stephen BALDWIN men of the right age in UK at the time.7
