Research Notes

  • Research note 01: I have a copy of a letter written by John to James, both grandsons of Clement. John was telling James what he knew of the family history. This is research done before 1978 (when I think the letter was written). He says Clement and Elizabeth were married in St Mary the Virgin, which is the same church Clement married his first wife. The PR shows he married Elizabeth, his second wife, in Hethersett..
Background information on Shoton Colliery, Castle Eden, Durham, England, - The colliery at Shotton - In 1840 the Haswell Coal Company began to sink a colliery to the west of Old Shotton near to Shotton Grange Farm and this pit was "won" the following year.
* The village of Shotton Colliery soon started to develop. The pit was prosperous at first, but on the 3rd of November 1877 the pit was closed and stayed closed until 1900. People left the village in search of work at other pits in the area. Clement and his family must have moved here when the colliery was reopened. I was unable to find any of them in the 1901 census, but they are there in 1911.
* When the pit reopened it grew rapidly. More housing was built and the village grew with the pit. Other industries in the village included the Coke Works and the Brick Works.
* By 1947 the original houses to the east of the railway line were at the end of their useful life and in the end most of the bottom end of Front Street was knocked down.

I believe George went to America with his family when he was young. I also believe George was married prior to Hannah (daughter of Rufus George) , and had a daughter from that relationship.
