Secondary circumstances

Census details

  • In 1891 in Great Yarmouth Richard Miles Patterson was included in the census schedule of The Workhouse in Yarmouth. He was aged 5 years. 5 years old and with his younger brother. Even though his birth was registered as MILES, he was listed as PATTERSON. This may be why his place of birth was listed as 'not known'. Maybe the Workhouse record keepers file papers away in name order and they were unable to find his. The 2 children could not have been abandoned as the Institution knew their names (even if one was 'wrong').
  • Richard Miles Patterson appeared on the census taken on the night of 31st March 1901, at 1 John Street, Clee, Grimsby, Lincolnshire, England, in the household of Francis John Mayes, his mother's future husband.

Military Career

Records show that Richard Miles Patterson served in the armed forces. On Richard's WW1 Royal Navy Record it shows he is the son of Richard and Susanna, born in Yarmouth 5th May 1885. He is only 5'4", and has tattoos on both arms. His number was A6934. He was living in North Shields when he enlisted 1st Dec 1914, and was demobbed in or to Peterhead in 1921. His various addresses, as reported in his record of service, have been recorded in his general info. He served on a number of ships, and at the end of his service was awarded £11/5/- in 1920, £16/17/6 in 1922 and £2/5/- in 1923.1

Research Notes

  • Research note 01: Richard may have been found in the London voting rolls in 1948 as Richard M PATTERSON, living in 78 Hereford Road, Paddington. There was no other person named PATTERSON registered at the same address. There were though 16 other adults registered at this one address, so the place is most likely flats of some sort. Most other houses in the area also have large numbers of adults living in them. The only thing that indicated this person is ours is his middle initial and his address (close to where his brother was). Therefore, this is only an outside possibility that needs proving from other sources.

Prior to this (1946) I found a Richard with no middle initial living at 30 Cuthbert Street, Paddington. No other adult registered to vote at this address, and my interpretation is that Richard was in the armed services. So maybe this is not our man as he would have been over 60 at the time.

I have not found Richard PATTERSON's death in the indexes, but remembering that his birth was registered as Richard MILES, there is a death in Southwark Jun qtr 1952, aged 68.
