Census details

Some aspects of Mary Ann Mallett's life. William's Will, which was sworn for porperty under £200 reads - He names himself William LINFORD of St George Tombland, Carpenter. He leaves all his estates in Norwich to Mary Ann for her natural life. This was 1 cottage in St Clements, near the bridge now occupied by Sarah BASSEY; 2 cottages in St Clement's Terrace (commonly called Philadelphia (see note below), out of St Augustine's Gate, now occupied by Messrs WARNE and BELL; 2 cottages in Sussex Street, St Augustines, now occupied by Mr FFINCH and Mrs BISHOP; 1 cottage and garden and common allotment in Hemsby. All above to kept in repair by 'his beloved wife' during the term of her natural life. Mary was able to mortgage any one of the above with the consent of his 2 executors.

When Mary Ann died all the property shall be sold to the best advantage and the money equally divided amongst his brothers and sisters - Robert LINFORD, George LINFORD, Elizabeth SALMON, Ann SALMON, Sarah WOLSTON, and if any of these be dead at the time of Mary Ann's death, then any children would have their parent's share. If his sister Ann be not living at the time of dividing the money, then William her husband should get an equal amount as each of his children.

He left all the household furniture and other effects to Mary Ann outright. He appointed her, Robert HOOD, carpenter and William LINFORD, draper of Martham as his executors.

He 'marked' the Will in 1849.

There is a codicil in 1851, saying his wife was at liberty to sell any one of the cottages with the consent of the executors, and he then bequeathed his nephew Robert LINFORD 1 shilling on the death of Mary Ann - because he had already had benefits from William during his life.

The will was proved 13th May 1852 at Norwich. William died 8th August 1851. When Mary Ann died in 1880 a note was made in the margin.2
