Military Career

Records show that William Alexander Gray Elrick served in the armed forces. On 19th Dec 1913, William joined the 6th Gordon Highlanders when he was 17. He was from Newhills, and was a bootmaker, working for Brown Bros, living in Maggie Cottage, Bankhead, at the time. He was invalided out whilst in Bedford at the end of 1914, but appears to have signed up again, this time into the 4th Gordon Highlanders, in July 1915 in Aberdeen - his address was the same as in 1913.

He was discharged in May 1916. His mother is named as Mary in the papers.

His medical report (abridged) was for Periostitis, and it was stated this dated from (I think) 1911. The report reads - He was kicked just below the right knee when playing football. It set up Periostotos and he was confined to home for 6 months. His knee joint swelled, and the swelling went down to his foot. -- bit I cannot read --. Discharged i16th Dec 1914. In July 1915 he rejoined as a ***** driver. He was sent down here a week ago, having has his knee injured by a blow from the handle of the car. Injury not die to active service. He did not serve overseas.
