Brushes with the LAW

A case of a speeding fine. In 1881 Charles ALDOUS, Baker of Diss was charged with the historical equivalent of speeding whilst over .05. In the words of the Bury and Norwich Post, dated 23rd August, Charles was seen by P C WATLING, who was standing in Ixworth Street, when Charles and some other men came from the direction of The Woolpack (a pub). He drove his pony at full pelt, and even mounted the footpath. he appeared to have had some beer. Fined 10/- with 13/6 costs, 14 days to pay.

Voter Enrolements

  • Charles Henry Aldous was enrolled to vote in 1887 in Wymondham, Norfolk, England.2
  • He was enrolled to vote in 1891 in 23 Clifton Street, Norwich, Norfolk, England. Even though Charles was NOT found in 1891 census at home, this must be him. His son Charles would only have been 15, so far too young to be on the electoral roll. Even though Charles was NOT found in 1891 census at home, this must be him. • He was enrolled to vote in 1898 in 23 Clifton Street, Norwich, Norfolk, England. This is a studio (photographers?), so it could now be his son who would have been 22. I don't know the sufferage age in 1898. This is a studio (photographers?), so it could now be his son who would have been 22. I don't know the sufferage age in 1898.4

Research Notes

  • Research note 01: In 1882 there was a notice in the Ipswich Journal that said " ALDOUS - 7th Inst (meaning 7th Dec 1882, or possibly 7th November 1882) - in Seneca Nematia County, Kansas, USA, Ann ALDOUS the wife of George ALDOUS, formerly of Gorleston, Great Yarmouth, aged 61. I found his father's second marriage in USA, and this coupled with the fact 2 of his children were born in USA points to us being on the right path. Further USA research not yet undertaken, as Charles disappears from the records after the birth of his last son. He may have gone to USA?.5
