Census details

  • In the census taken on the night of 30th March 1851, James was the head of the household and Mary was his wife. The address was 125 Castle Row, Magdalene Street, Thetford, Suffolk, England. James and Sarah were originally recorded as lodgers with Henry STARNE and his wife and son. At the bottom of the people with James and Sarah is a 'grandson' who I think must be the grandson of Henry (who may well be the father of Mary Ann). Their children Sarah and John were living with them.

Research Notes

  • Research note 01: May have been found in Durham, with Elizabeth W as a wife, in 1861. He was working as a Coal miner, and his first 2 children were with them. The ages are correct, but the places of birth are not. There is a son John Henry, aged 12 and a daughter Agnes aged 5, so I assume Mary Ann died some time between 1851 and 1856
    * In 1871, James is with a wife name Harriet, 21 years younger than he is, and there are 9 children in the house. His eldest son is still with him, and they are both working as coal miners in Northumberland.
