Research Notes

  • Research note 01: William was born in Barningham, Suffolk, and married Sarah there in 1834. This couple had 4 children in Barningham and/or Thetford Norfolk, last one in 1839, and 9 children in Tasmania, first one in 1842. I found the family in Thetford Norfolk in 1841, so this narrows the search for a journey down to 9 months (June 1841 - March 1842.
    * In 1836 the Bury and Norwich Post carried articles relating to assisted passages to NSW and VDL. A Head of family could apply for a passage by paying 4L (£4). Wife and male children under 15, and all female children of any age are included in this fee. The same article says wages in the Colonies for Farm Servants are £15 - £20 per annum (with accommodation and food thrown in). Food consisted of 7 pound of beef or mutton, 11 pound of flour, and 1 cow to milk. Accommodation is a cottage with a small piece of land for a garden.
