Census details

  • Charles Woodcock appeared on the census taken on the night of 7th April 1861, at Lincoln Lane, Boston, Lincolnshire, England, in the household of Millicent Cropper, his grandmother.
  • He appeared on the census taken on the night of 2nd April 1871, living in 17 Lincoln Lane, Boston, Lincolnshire, England in the household of his mother, Harriett Woodcock. He was 16 years old.
  • In the census taken on the night of 3rd April 1881, Charles was the head of the household. The address was Boston, England. With his brother, Thomas Woodcock.
  • In the census taken on the night of 5th April 1891, Charles was the head of the household and Lizzie was his wife. The address was 45 Rosegarth Street, Boston, Lincolnshire, England. There is a Mary HEMSHELL, a 54 year old widow living on her own means, and an Ellen MOORE a 14 year old general servant on the premises, Mary (?) and Mary Ellen Moore. Their children Mary and William were living with them.
  • In the census taken on the night of 31st March 1901, Charles was the head of the household. The address was The Victoria Inn, 43 Rosegarth Street, Boston, Lincolnshire, England The census form most likely shows him as married, but his wife is not with him. Certainly, there is no death for Lizzie before this date. On the premises, there are 2 barmaids, a boarder and a housekeeper. The housekeeper is named as Mary HEMSELL, a widow aged 66. She is the widow of William, who in 1881 was the beer housekeeper of the Duke of York, where Lizzie FOWLER, her sister Susannah, and her parents were living.. His children Mary, William and Frances were living with him.
  • In the census taken on the night of 2nd April 1911 Charles was the head of the household. The address was Boston, England. The census form still shows him as married, but his wife is not with him. On the premises are a housekeeper aged 34 and 3 of her children aged under 8, Mary Hemcell Moore, Richard Moore, Edna Moore and Mary Ellen Moore. There are also 1 servant and 7 boarders. I have no proof that the MOORE children belong to Charles, but it does look as if he included at least the 4 children of Mary alive in 1911 as being fathered by him on the census form.
Some aspects of Charles Woodcock's life. In 1911 Charles says he has had 14 children, 7 alive and 7 dead. The question was meant to be answered only by women, and only about their present marriage, so this information is certainly a bonus. HOWEVER, we do NOT know if Charles is counting only those children born to Lizzie, or if he is including all or some of the 7 children (3 still alive) born to his unmarried housekeeper, M E MOORE.

In 1901, he had a 66-year-old widowed housekeeper, Mary HENSELL, born in Horncastle. In 1911, his housekeeper was M E MOORE, 34-year-old single woman, born in Boston. Her children's names are Mary Hansell MOORE (8), Richard MOORE (5) and Edna MOORE (6 months). The name of the oldest could link her to the previous housekeeper, unless of course the child was named after a person who, while not related, was a good friend of the family.

This same Mary HANSELL, way back in 1881, was the wife of the publican of the Duke of York, where Charles future wife, Lizzie, was the 14-year-old domestic servant

Albert Frederick CHITTOCK and Mary Ann HANSELL were the parents of Carrie Elizabeth WOODCOCK's husband. I have NOT found a connection between the Mary HANSELL who was a housekeeper at the Victoria Inn and this Mary Ann HANSELL. I have also NOT found what the connection is, if any, between the 66 year old Mary Ann HANSELL and Mary Ellen MOORE who named her first child Mary Hemsell MOORE. I know the spelling is different, but the family used various spellings and both these variations appear.
Background information on The Victoria Inn, 43 Rosegarth Street, Boston, Lincolnshire, England, - 43 appears to have been cleared, and new shops built. However, this address is mighty close to Pipe Office Lane. Have a look on Google Maps.
