Brushes with the LAW

In the Barnstaple Boro Sessions, 13th April 1841, Emanuel, aged 24, was imprisoned for 4 months for larceny by a servant. The Exeter and Plymouth Gazette, 17th April, 1941, confirms that he pleaded guilty of stealing several pairs of shoes from his employer Mr Wadham, boot and shoemaker of this town. He was to spend one week of each month in solitary confinement, the remainder at hard labour.

  • Research note 01: May have been found in Bristol in 1851. Listed as Edwin BATH, a shoemaker aged 32 and Mary his wife aged 25. They had one daughter Susana, born in Barnstable aged 11. No death of a Susan that I can see, and no marriage of Edwin or Emanuel Bath between 1841 and 1851.
    * May have been found in 1861 as Edwin and Mary BATES, with a son Alfred J aged 11. He was a cordwainer, and they were living in Bristol.
