Census details

Some aspects of William Chugg's life. In 1902 William was charged by the RSPCA for cruelty to a horse. He had a 20 year old horse (which is very elderly in horse-years) who was in foal. William decided that she needed to be put down, but as she had foundered near a public road, he and 2 employees dragged said mare across a field by means of a rope and a horse drawn cart. Once she was far enough away from the road, she was shot. He was found not guilty, see exhibit.

In 1924, the same man was hiring our for service a 'High-class Shire Cart Colt' for a fee of £1/2/6.
Brushes with the LAW

In 1910 William CHUGG of Keypitt Farm was summoned for not sending his 2 children, Thomas and Dorothy CHUGG, regularly to school. The School Board said these children were most backward in their education, and William countered by saying the school was nearly 3 miles from Keypitt. William was told he must send the children to school, and he agreed that Thomas would go to Ilfracombe National School and Dorothy to Ilfracombe Hermitage School. There is NO birth registered in Devon that could be Dorothy, so I think it must be Emily (who would have been 8 in 1910) or, much less likely, her sister Edith (13). From the way the memorial 1915 for Reginald is worded, Edith was dead by then, as there is only the one sister.

As a counter to this story, William advertised in the Devon and Exeter Gazette dated May 17th, 1904, for a respectable woman to teach 3 young children at home on the farm. He preferred a farmer's daughter or widow.

Commemoration

His death was commemorated by an obituary in the an unknown place newspapers on 4 July 1929 Died suddenly at Keypitt farm. Buried in Berrynarbor 4th.10
