His life was recorded thus ~~ William was born in 1854, son of Joseph Cato of Hobart. There were at least 3 other children in the family. First employed by Mssrs Marsh & Co of Hobart, then in 1878 he netered employment of w hart and Son, Ironmongers of Launceston. He worked there 50 years. He retired in 1928 as a 'partner'.
He married EIsabella Elizabeth LUCAS 2nd October, 1878, daughter of James and Matilda LUCAS, farmers of Hobart. They had 4 children, and lived in 'Cadrington', 10 hillside Crescent, attended Margaret Street Methodist Chruch. William was a trustee of the chruch, a member of the choir and sunday school teacher. He was also a trustee of the Methodist Ladies Colledge, and a member of the benevolent society.14

  • Research note 01: William Francis Cato was born in Hobart on 26 May 1854, a son of Joseph Cato (1821-1884) and his wife Frances Hickman, formerly Hertzman (1823-1908). William married Isabella Lucas on 2 Oct 1878. Their four children were born in Launceston: Montagu in 1881, Louis in 1884, Minnie in 1886 and Eva in 1887. The family attended the Margaret Street Methodist Church where William was a trustee, a member of the choir and a Sunday School teacher. He was also a trustee of the Methodist Ladies' College, a member of the Launceston Benevolent Society and South Launceston Bowls Club.
