Census details

Some aspects of Elvina Gent's life. There is a bit of a story about Laura’s birth in Cornwall. My father had been told that Laura’s parents went to Cornwall in order for her father, Albert Blyth Cannell, to take up a position as game keeper on the Basset Estate of Tehidy. The Bassets were a wealthy mining family. What we did not know was that Elvina and Albert went to Cornwall as an unmarried couple. Laura was born in a little farm cottage not far from a place called Hell’s Mouth near Camborne (it is very remote) and several months later her parents married in Falmouth. I ordered a copy of both Laura’s birth certificate and her parent’s marriage certificate. On the birth certificate Albert and Elvina are recorded as being married! No one will know for sure what happened but I suppose you have to assume that Elvina became pregnant by Albert and they disappeared to Cornwall where no one would know them, pretending to be married perhaps. Later they then married and then returned to Norwich to carry on with their lives. Kindly supplied by a great grand daughter of Laura's.3
