Brushes with the LAW

In May 1884, William was charged with keeping pigs within the town boundary of Port Wallaroo. He did not appear in court, sending a telegram to the effect he had missed the train, and requested an adjournment. It was granted.

2 years later he was in the papers again, this time for using threatening language and disturbing the peace at the Exchange Hotel. He pleased NOT guilty, and seems to have beaten the charge. Regardless, it shows he was the Licensee of the premises.

In between the 2 above notes, we have a civil case, with the same lawyer appearing for William. William was being sued for non-payment of a debt, and there is a lengthy discourse in the court as to the price charged for regular delivery of chaff, and notice given for any rises in same. William lost.

In 1882 William was in the papers as the Landlord of the Exchange Hotel, so this means he was there for some time. In 1884 he was writing with vitriol to the paper (The Wallaroo Times of course) about the Inspector of Health and his (William's) not so clean and rather smelly pig sty. William thinks the Mayor, who is somehow more connected to the Health Inspector than being his employer, has it in for him.

In 1889 William was made insolvent. His occupation was licenced victualler.13
