Military Career

Records show that Alfred Adolphus Biggins served in the armed forces. He joined up in the name os Alfred Adolphus 21st Feb 1916, in NSW, when he was 36 years old. He was a stone builder, and his NOK was Rebecca Elizabeth, who was living in Surry Hills, NSW at the time.

He was promoted to Lance Corporal in 1917. In the same year he was admitted to hospital as suffering from Mustard Gas Poisoning.

There was a telegram dated 23rd Nov 1917 to his wife, telling her he was suffering from mild mistard gas poinoning. There is a letter dated Feb 1918 to his wife, who was living at 521 Bourke Street, Surry Hille, NSW, saying he was seriously ill. A retirn letter from Rebecca indicates that she had been told he was suffering from Septic Brocho Pneumonia.

He returned to Australia in 1918, and was discharged as medicially unfit in Feb 1919.
