Primary events

Some aspects of Charles Andrew Alomes's life. (1944) EAGLEHAWK NECK. — Mr Andrew Alomes, Eaglehawk Neck's oldest resident today celebrates the 84th anniversary of his birthday. He was born at Forcett and is a son of the late Mr Jacob Alomes, whose father, Mr Robert Alomes, was a member of Governor David Collins' colonising expedition to Port Phillip in the Calcutta in 1803. Robert took part in the founding of Hobart in 1804, when he assisted in the hoisting of the Union Jack for the first time in the new colony. Many of the Calcutta migrants settled in the Forcett district. They included Gangell, Jones, Thorne, Townsend, Parker, and Kearney. Mr Alomes brother, Lode wicke, still resides there. His reminiscences of the early days of Forcett and Eaglehawk Neck would fill a volume.

(1946) VAIN BID TO SAVE LIFE

An old man struggled gallantly but in vain to save his fishing companion from drowning after a big wave had swept him from a rock ledge at Eaglehawk Neck yesterday.

OSCAR VAN WOOLLEY (57), farmer, of Eaglehawk Neck, was fishing off the rocks with Andrew Charles Alomes (86), also of Eaglehawk Neck, when the wave surged over the rock ledge and carried Woolley into the sea. Although carried out a short distance by a heavy swell, Woolley swam back towards the rock, where his outstretched hand was clutched by Alomes. Alomes hung on grimly for almost 10 minutes, until a fierce undertow dragged Wooley below the surface. He was not seen again.3,4
