Some aspects of William Base's life. The Age dated Sat 26th April 1879 reported William's death. He was in the Traveller's Aid Society, and died of meningitis.

Some aspects of William Base's life. There has to be a good story in here somewhere. William was a 'shoe manufacturer', who was left as the guardian of a nephew in 1874. He was involved in property deals in 1874, I assume in relation to the Will of Maria (his sister). Then by 1879 he was In Melbourne Dying of meningitis. He was in an institution, which could mean he was penniless, but may also mean he was just friendless and too ill to look after himself.

I have not found a will for him in UK, but his wife and kids (who did not travel to AU with him), were well provided for.

There is in fact a note re liquidation by arrangement dated 1876, so he may have lost his business, and buggered off to the colonies.8
