Anecdote - Musings and Reasonings

Research note (complicated): Henry's death is from Valerie Grey-Wilson, and does not appear in the Australian Vital CD. No details of a voyage to Australia after the Hyrabad in 1852 either. We should try to find him in the census in England, or some record of his after the birth of his last child.

I found a divorce in 1870 between Henry and Martha in England. No other location and noting in the newspapers. As the youngest child was only 2 at the time, the divorce was not due to desertion (had to be 7 years back then). Henry was party number 2, so Martha was the petitioner (i.e. she divorced him). After 1857, the rules for a woman divorcing a man were - need to couple the charge of adultery with another offence, such as bigamy or desertion.

The National Archives have a record of this divorce, dated 1871, which lead me to the following newspaper report - Diss Express 16trg June 1871.

Base v Base - divorce on the grounds of adultery and cruelty. Martha said her maiden name was SNELLING and that she was married in Wortham. Her evidence went on. She said at the time of their marriage Henry was working in the Norwich Post Office, and that they lived in Nelson House, Dereham Road.

After a short time Henry took up intemperance and maltreated her. His reputation lead to the couple leaving Norwich for London, where Henry entered into a partnership with a chemist. This did not last long.

In London, Henry used violence against her, often throwing things at her. At Christmas 1866, she had gone to bed before her husband returned home late. He did not think she should be in bed, and threw the teapot at her. She made further accusations.

James WINTER, of Mortimer road, her brother in law, said he had not seen Henry use violence but had seen the marks on Martha's face.

Samuel WADE, agricultural chemist, said that he was in partnership with Henry for 12 months, but that it has been dissolved in consequence of his (Henry's) bad habits. He had heard screams from Martha, and had found a teapot in the fireplace, and other things strewn about.

Mrs Annie GERMANE, formerly Miss Collins said that in 1852 she resided in Norwich and happened to meet Henry. They became intimate, and there were frequent acts of adultery committed.

The divorce was granted and Martha got custody of the children. Henry did not appear to give evidence.

Note that Henry is not the man found with Eliza in 1881, as his father was James a weaver..7
