Primary events

  • Birth: Jonathan Patterson was born in 1796 in Norfolk, England, There was a John PATTERSON baptised in Yarmouth on 14th April 1799 who had a date of birth entered into the parish record as 4th November 1789. He was the son of James and Mary nee LONDON, but this would make his age at death 10 years too young, so I am NOT going to claim this couple as his parents. There is no other entry in the parish register for Jonathan's christening at a later date.
  • Christening: He was christened on 7 August 1796 in St Fabian and St Sebastian, Woodbastwick, Norfolk, England. He is confirmed as being from Woodbastwick in various prison records held in the Toll House in yarmouth.1
  • Marriage: He married Mary Waterton, daughter of John Waterton and Elizabeth Blunt, on Monday, 19 April 1813 in St Andrew's Church, Burlingham, Norfolk, England, when they were 16 years, 8 months and 12 days ~&~ 21 years, 7 months and 7 days old. As the parish record says 'with consent of parents' we can assume that at least one of them was not over 21. One odd thing is that even though the parents gave consent, neither were witnesses to the marriage. Neither bride not groom was literate.2,3
  • Marriage of Son: His child William Patterson was married on 25 June 1837 in Gorleston, Norfolk, England.4
  • (Widow) Death: In 1839, at the age of 42 years, 8 months and 24 days, Jonathan was left a widower by the death of Mary Patterson; certificate reads wife of Jonathan PATTERSON, labourer, aged 46 died of apoplexy. Witnessed by her son William.5
  • Marriage: Jonathan Patterson married Priscilla Partridge, daughter of Mark Partridge and Charlotte Rudd, on Sunday, 28 January 1844 in St Nicholas' Church, Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, England, when they were 47 years, 5 months and 21 days ~&~ 36 years, 8 months and 11 days old. The ceremony was witnessed by Emma Patterson and James Burman. certificate reads - Jonathan PATTERSON full aged widower and Priscilla BEXFIELD full aged widow were married by banns. Matthew was a labourer and Priscilla worked in a factory. Jonathan's father was not listed, but Priscilla's was Mark PARTRIDGE, a sawyer. The witnesses were James BURMAN (unknown to me at this time) and Emma PATTERSON who was Jonathan's daughter. From the birth date of their first child it appears that Priscilla was in the early months of pregnancy when they married.6,7
  • Marriage of Daughter: His child Amy Patterson was married on 7 March 1847 in Great Yarmouth, England.8,1
  • Death: Jonathan died on 19 April 1849 in Row 127, Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, England, Certificate reads Jonathan PATTERSON a coal heaver aged 52 died of cancer and haemorrhage. The death was witnessed by Frances SIMMONDS (Aged 52 years, 8 months and 12 days, worked back from recorded birth date).9
  • Burial: He was buried on 22 April 1849 in St Nicholas' Churchyard, Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, England.1

Secondary circumstances

Census details

Some aspects of Jonathan Patterson's life. Jonathan had at least 11 children. One son Matthew had 19, his son Matthew had at least 10, and this younger Matthew's daughter Ellen had at least 11. So in a direct line, over 4 generations there were 51 children. Once I have fully researched all of Jonathan's line - no mean task I can see - we will have the total number of descendents of Jonathan and Mary.
*As at May 2013, I have found more than 300 direct descendents of Jonathan, in at least 3 continents.

Research Notes

  • Research note 01: Some researchers have the parents as James PATTERSON and Mary Maria LONDON, but the John who was christened in 1797 was born 10 years earlier, thereby making him the wrong age (and name!) for our Jonathan. There was a christening in Woodbastwick of a Jonathan 7th August 1796, parents John and Ann. This couple had other children christened in the same church - William 1790, Eliza 1792, Sarah 1793. John PATTERSON married Amy LOCK by banns on the 14th Dec 1789 (see exhibit). Neither party were literate, nor can I read the first witnesses signature. Second witness witnessed most marriages so is most likely the parish clerk. The fact that Jonathan and Mary named a daughter Amy makes me believe that this family is confirmed enough to be entered into the database as tentative, pending further confirmation..
  • Research note 02: Another possibility was supplied by a fellow researcher via email 22nd August 2011 - Christened 27 Dec 1795 at Ovingham, Northumberland, son of John Patterson and Betty. Discounted as there are many records indicating that he was from Woodbastwick..
