Primary events

Some aspects of James Ayres's life. There is a lease of land in Little Keyford dated 1818 to the executors of James AYRES who seems to have left trusts for Edward NEWPORT Junior and Frederick HODDINOT son of John HODDINOT and grandson of George HODDINOTT. James brother died in Little Keyford as a opulent farmer. The lease expired on the death of Benjamin HODDINOTT, 20 Oct 1887.

The Benjamin who died in 1887 is buried in Buckland Dinham, at the age of 78. Therefore YOB 1809. The only Chr is to John and Ann in Somerton (birth date 31st Jan 1809).

The marriage of this couple produced other children, one a Frederick in 1810, so we know that John was the son of George HODDINOT. Disappointingly, no Chr turns up in the registers.

Some aspects of James Ayres's life. Cambridge Chronicle and Journal 12 September 1817 - Covers James death and wealth. He left over £70,000 acquired by extreme parsimony, and unceasing exertions to increase his wealth. He left £20,000 to his relatives (1st cousins etc) and the balance to 4 legatees, one a tailor and one a carpenter. Please, please do note his address.

Legatees are :: John AYRES a cabinet maker, Richard AYRES a tailor, Rev John BAILEY Chilthom and George SHINGSON of Frome.

I have done a lot of work on the contents of the Will, and I believe that I have pieced together the 2 AYRES beneficiaries. The paths taken to work this out are recorded, but too involved to place here. Certainly available if anyone is researching the individuals. All will eventually appear on my web pages.

The Jane who died at 90 was born Jane PRINCE. She married (1) Joseph WALLIS 1766, and (2) James AYRES 1788.The James she married was a bachelor, but of course PRs do contain errors. I believe the James who left the legacy was married (1) Diana HOPKINS 1759 and (2) Mary DYER 1779. I think Mary died in 1807, so fits the bill to be the unnamed wife of James as mentioned in the Will, but then so does Jane.

I have NOT found the James who was married to Jane in other records - the reason there are all the 'believes' and 'thinks' above.

My conclusions re the AYRES legatees are that they a brother and a nephew of James. Richard (brother) is the one who married Matilda Jane RYALL in 1826. I believe he died in Frome 1834. His nephew John died unmarried in Fiddington House in 1864. I have a small reservation in that neither were 'filthy rich' when they died. Certainly not penniless, but not living the life you would expect from a £10,000 plus inheritance.

I counterbalanced that reservation but searching for any AYRES from Somerset who WERE filthy rich, and did not find any, so I am thinking that somehow the Estate ended up valued at rather less than it looks on paper. Maybe it would be worth me finding out what happened to the Reverend who was one of the executors.

RE Fiddington House. This was a home for the Insane run by a Mr WILLETT a linen draper. It was purpose built around 1834, and from the descriptions and advertisements, was for lunatics with funds.

Anecdote - Musings and Reasonings

Research note (complicated): A James AYRES was buried in St John's 1817 aged 81, therefore YOB was 1736. If this is our man, then he was 43 when he married Mary.

There are 2 James AYRES Chr 1736 in Frome, one the son of Benjamin and Joan, the other the son of James and Jane nee BISS. This family already entered in the DB.

Another children of Benjamin and Joan is John 1727.

Benjamin is most likely the man who left a Will c1778. He was from Gayford, Selwood, Frome. People mentioned in the Will are son John, daughter Mary, son Richard (the executor), son James, friends Joseph SINGER, Edward NEWPORT and John STOPHOUS. An occupier of a dwelling Benjamin owned was ?ark DYER. Proved in London 1779 (ancestry.com).

Resultant leases from this will appear to be - 1823 Richard HODDINOTT leased a messuage in Little Keyford, late Benjamin AYRES, on lives of Benjamin s/o [his nephew] John HODDINOTT, then held by leased dated 1 Mar 1818 to the exrs of James EYRES deceased on the lives of Edwd s/o Edwd NEWPORT, Gent late of Keyford, and Fredk s/o John HODDINOTT, gs/o George HODDINOTT. Richard's lease expired on the death of Benjamin HODDINOTT, 20 Oct 1887

Richard HODDINOTT also leased Whitchurches in Feltham Marsh on the lives of Wm HODDINOTT (52), John (11) s/o Joseph HODDINOTT, Yeoman of High Crofts Fm, and John JONES (13) s/o Joseph JONES, Yeoman of New Church Farm, cancelling a lease dated 24 Jul 1812 to Wm HODDINOTT, Yeoman of Frome. The 1823 lease expired with John HODDINOTT's death on 14 Oct 1874

Benjamin appears in the burial register of St John's 17th July 1779, but there is NO AGE given.

NOW TO FLICK TO JAMES - There is a notice in the Bath Chronicle regarding the 1st cousins of James AYRES who died 25th August 1817. It was also addressed to descendents of these 1st cousins, provided they were living at the time of James' death, regardless of life or otherwise of the intervening people. I read into this that the James in question had no living direct descendents alive when he died. THEREFORE our people must be from a descendent of Benjamin.

The James above left £20,000 to his 1st cousins and their descendents (as written in his will). 2 of the executors of the Will were George KINGDON abd the Rev John BAILEY.

Research Notes

  • Research note 01: The marriage bond entered into by James has his address as Selwood, Frome, Somerset and Diana's as Orchardy, Somerset. Both were unmarried.
