Primary events

Secondary circumstances

  • Occupation: John was a yeoman - farming 130 acres in 1851.

Census details

  • John was named first in the census taken on the night of 6th June 1841. Others in the house included Jane Chugg, George Chugg, Thomas Chugg and John Chugg, but no relationships were recorded in this census. The address was Keypitt or Haypitt Farm, Ilfracombe, Devon, England. He was aged 65 years.. With 3 farm workers. Next door at Traine? was Jane aged 4, George aged 15 and Mary aged 14 (all CHUGG).
  • In the census taken on the night of 30th March 1851, John was the head of the household and Jane was his wife. The address was Ilfracombe, England. Their children George and Thomas were living with them, along with 1 domestic and 3 farm servants.
Some aspects of John Chugg's life. I believe John is buried in Morthoe (1858, aged 81), with a grandson George who died in 1891 aged 35. Thomas CHUGG (John's son and George's father) may also be in there, but there is no age or burial date available.11

Anecdote - Musings and Reasonings

Research note (complicated): There is a mention in the newspapers 1800 that a John CHUGG who may have been born around 1740, was farming on 'Haypit Land', located in Ilfracombe. I believe this to be a 'printer's error' and it should be Keypit (previously Kibbit). See source detail....

This would/should mean that John born in 1776 was fathered by a John born c1740.

In 1800 there is an ad in the papers about a lease in John's name being 'determinable' when 3 people then aged 58, 30 and 35. At a guess this could be John (his father), William (his brother) and another.12

Research Notes

  • Research note 05: Buried with his 2 sons, in Morthoe.
  • Research note 02: I have 2 families of John and Jane CHUGG

    1. One is the son of John and Mary nee WATTS, who married Jane CHUGG in 1806. He was 30 and she was 23. First child found so far is John (of course!!) born 1811. Then comes George 1815, Jane 1817 and Thomas 1825. Married in West down, children born in Ilfracombe.

    2. The other couple had children in West Down. George 1822, Richard 1824 and Mary 1826. I have not discovered this John's birth details, nor the marriage.

I decided upon making this 2 couples instead of 1 because

         a. They had 2 children named George alive at the same time

         b. The births were recorded in Ilfracombe (1) and West Down (2)

         c. Couple (1) had a son Thomas in Ilfracombe in-between births to couple (2) in West Down

What gives cause to question this is the following:

Jane (1) was alive in 1861 as she was with her son George and his wife (Jane!!!!) in Ilfracombe. There is only one Jane CHUGG recorded in the 1861 census in England of an age to be our Jane and there is only 1 death in Devon after 1861 who could be ours. This woman had as her executor her son Richard, who was born in West Down, and who I have as the son of Jane (2).

Could it be that the George who I have as being Chr in West Down in 1822 is the same one who was Chr in Ilfracombe in 1815? I have seen children recorded in Parish Registers twice. Not often, and most of the time these are 'receiving into' the church. And of course these are separate churches as well. I have not found any mentions of the 1822 George in later records. The one born in 1815 I have up until 1861, when he was with his mother, Jane.

I am NOT going to amalgamate these 2 families yet. But I will record all this within the records as research notes, and it will show on the web site..
  • Research note 03: In 1851 there were 2 John CHUGGS in Devon born before 1800.

    1. married to Elizabeth with a son named John (1828). He was born in 1776 in Bittadon, and he is found in the 1841 census with same wife, but with a daughter named Mary. They lived at Twitcham, West Down in both census. Elizabeth is 11 years younger, so may be a second wife. He was farming 100 acres

    2. married to Jane with sons George and Thomas. He was born in 1776 in Ilfracombe. This is the one farming Keypitt, who I have connected to John and Mary WATTS.

They are both dead by 1861.There are only 2 deaths registered for John CHUGG in Barnstaple. No ages are given in the index.

    A. Dec qtr 1856 5b/296

    B. Jun qtr 1858 5b/327

There are many different versions of these families on the ancestry family trees, so I am inclined to ignore the lot. One good thing is that one of them most likely died in Mortehoe, so our researcher may help there. I am hoping the burial register has an age..
  • Research note 04: in November 1855, an Estate called Keypitt Land, consisting of 43 Acres of Orchard, Meadow, Dairy and Pasture, adjoining the Turnpike Road, was offered for a 7, 11 or 14 year lease. The proprietor was said to be Hugh Sloley of Warnscombe.
    * This same place was offered up for tender in September 1866. At that time it was said to have been occupied for many years by John ROBINS, deceased. Hugh was now living 12 Montpellier Terrace, Ilfracombe.
    * In 1908 the same property was auctioned. It was said to be in the hands of Mr J REED, tenant.
***** I am assuming this is a different farm to the one lived in by the CHUGGS for many years..13
