Military Career

Records show that James Percy Allerton served in the armed forces. James joined the 2nd light horse brigade machine gun sqd. 27th October 1914. He was tall for the time, 5 foot 11. Fair hair, blue eyes and a 39" chest to match. He was demobbed in April 1919. There is nothing in his records around April 1915, but he was in hospital (for a hernia got from carting sand bags) on the Gallipoli Peninsula in June of that year, and there is a note to say he was returned to Australia in August 1915. The next entry, dated Jan 1916, says he as returned to duty 2nd MD, but there are no details of any journey. He was wounded in action in Dec 1917, GSW to his right arm, I think from service in the Crimea. One note says he was transferred to Australia on the HT Tofua from Suez in Dec 1917, and in Feb 1918 it says he was in Menangle (there is one of those in NSW). In Jan 1918 it appears eh was again on the high seas, this time on the Wiltshire. No destination is recorded, but he was marched into the Central training Depot from Aust ex Wiltshire, in April 1918.

The GSW caused a compund fracture of his right humerus, though I assume he did not find it so.
