Primary events

Secondary circumstances

  • Occupation: George was A butcher's assistant in 1851, a fisherman on his daughter's marriage registration and in 1881 census, and a labourer in 1882 when his daughter Ellen was christened.

Census details

  • In the census taken on the night of 6th June 1841 George was included in the household of James Larn in Back of Cromer Place, Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, England along with Sarah Ann Ward, James Larn, Sarah Ann Larn, Mary (Ann) Larn and John Larn. He was aged 7 years.8
  • He appeared on the census taken on the night of 30th March 1851, living in Row 29, Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, England in the household of his parents, Sarah Ann Ward and James Larn. He was 17 years old.
  • In 1861 in Great Yarmouth George Larn was included in the household of Elizabeth PATTERSON a widowed charwoman aged 48.. James is listed as a lodger, and George and Mary Ann are listed as Son and D-I-L. I think the census taker means the son and D-I-L of James, not Elizabeth.
  • In the census taken on the night of 2nd April 1871, George was the head of the household. The address was 3 Iron Gate Alley, South Market Road, Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, England. With a housekeeper Hannah ALBROW and a niece, Mary a HORN aged 4.
  • In the census taken on the night of 3rd April 1881, George was the head of the household. The address was 8 east nettle hill, Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, England. George is listed as single, and was living with a housekeeper, however we know he was married to Mary Ann (nee LONG). The housekeeper was Hannah Albrow, same as previous census..
  • In 1891 in Great Yarmouth George Larn was included in the household of Matilda CLARKE, a widow who had 2 chranchildren with her. George was a lodger.
  • In 1901 in Great Yarmouth George Larn was included in the household of Sarah HOLMES, a married wonam whose husband is not at home. She had her mother and an adopted son with her though. George was a lodger.

Research Notes

  • Research note 01: The only census George and Mary Ann are together is 1861. IN 1871 he is with a housekeeper, and his wife Mary Ann LONG was with her mother (at a different address in Yarmouth). In 1873 the first of Mary Ann's children to be given the middle name of GOFFIN was born. All later children were also given the same middle name, and the place where father would be recorded is blank. In 1881 Mary Ann was the head of the house, and there was a lodger named GOFFIN, so it looks like George and Mary Ann went their separate ways, and the 4 children born after 1872 were not fathered by George.
