Anecdote - Musings and Reasonings

Research note (complicated): DOB in 1939 was said to be 12/9/1879. HOWEVER, there is no birth registration for any Edward POSTLE in this year. He appears to have kept this year of birth as it shows this in 1911 census and when he died. Thsi meant it was worth having a serios look at all the census records. In 1881 Yarmouth he was 4, in 1891 same place he was 15, when he signed up for the army also in Yarmouth 14th Feb 1896 he was 18 years and 5 months old, when in fact he was really 19 years and 5 months. His father was William POSTLE of Yaxley Sq., and his marriage is shown withing the records.

So we now know where the 'error' crept in. His adress in 1912 was 11 Horner's Place, Buckle Lane, Normanton.

Military Career

Records show that Edward Postle served in the armed forces. Edward joined the 4th Bat. of the Norfolk Regiment in 1896. Gr transferred to the reserve in 1904 and rejoined in 1908. He was noted as being in confinement of the Civil Power for 6 months , released 7th June 1910, and he was discharged in 1912. His family is described as Father William, elder brother William, younger brother George and wife Edith. Edith was Edith Maud HOLDEN and the marriage was 1908 in York. One child, Edward Charles born in Wakefield 16th Jan 1910. His intended place of residence on discharge was to be Normanton Yorkshire where we found him in 1911. His conduct was stated to have been very good

In 1914 he was recalled in Pontefract (aged 36) and appears to have served in the Labour Corps. In 1918 he was in Huddersfield Hospital for a month with a bad back, having fallen in a quarry.

Military

  • 1896, Joined the Norfolk Regiment
  • 1898-1904, India
  • 1912, after serving 16 years. It is intersting to note that his conduct was said to be Very Good. Surprising seeing as he spent 6 months in civilian prison during his 16 years with the colours. He returned (possibly because he was in the reserves) to work in the Labour Corps in 1914, where he was working until after 1918.
