Primary events

Secondary circumstances

  • Occupation: Charles was a gas fitter in 1890, a shipyard labourer in 1891, and a labourer on the borough council in 1911. A retired marine engineer's labourer in 1939.1
  • Residence: In 1908 Charles Henry and Mary lived in 20 Row 8, Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, England.

Census details

  • He appeared on the census taken on the night of 2nd April 1871, living in 2 Meredith Street, St James, Finsbury, Greater London, England in the household of his parents, Edward Sewell Alger and Mary Ann (?). He was 2 years old.
  • In 1881 in Depwade Charles Henry Alger was included in the household of an inmate. There was a Kate ALGERS in the workhouse as well, also born in Lanarkshire (1872).
  • In the census taken on the night of 5th April 1891, Charles Henry was the head of the household and Mary was his wife. The address was 25 (or possibly 26) Shakespear St, Jarrow, Durham, England. I believe there is a mistake. Martha is listed twice, once as a male. Her brother Arthur was missing from the 1891 census back in Yarmouth, so I am 'guessing' the entry was really him. Martha King, Emma King and Arthur John King are Mary Ann's siblings. Their children Beatrice were living with them.
  • In the census taken on the night of 31st March 1901, Charles Henry was the head of the household and Mary was his wife. The address was 26 Ferry Street, Jarrow, Durham, England An error in the census has Charles as being born in Yarmouth. He was clearly scottish in the previous 2 census. There was a Robert Thaxter, dock labourer living as a lodger with them. Robert was born in Yarmouth.. Their children Beatrice, Charles and William were living with them.
  • In the census taken on the night of 2nd April 1911, Charles Henry was the head of the household and Mary was his wife. The address was 3 Row 8, Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, England. a 4 room house. Confirmed name is actually ALGER. The marriage produced 7 children, all of whom are alive at the time of the census. Beatrice and Gertrude are not at home (but Gertrude was listed and then crossed out) Their children Charles, William, Emma, Annie and Spencer were living with them.
  • Charles Henry Alger was listed in the 1939 Registration in UK - address shown as 20 Row 8, Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, England.1
