Primary events

  • Birth: Elizabeth Dakin was born circa 1750 in Unknown from age at death. There are no christenings in Yarmouth for the name of DAKIN in the free reg transcriptions around this time. The nearest is a couple George and Elizabeth DEACON who had a daughter Sarah christened in 1745.1
  • Christening: She was christened on 16 July 1769 in St Nicholas' Church, Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, England. THIS IS NOT our Elizabeth, but this really does need further work. Many others on ancestry believe that she is, but they do not have the first LEVEL/LOVELL marriage.2
  • Marriage: She married Sameul Level on Saturday, 9 April 1774 in Great Yarmouth, England.3
  • (Widow) Death: In 1790 Elizabeth was left a widow by the death of Sameul Level; as Elizabeth is stated to be a widow when James was christened.
  • Marriage: Elizabeth Dakin married James Larn, son of Samuel Smith Larn and Mary Wilson Cullingham, between 1790 and 1793. This does not appear in St Nicholas transcriptions. On Sarah's birth details in 1789 and on both James' in 1793 and 1795 the mother is stated to be Elizabeth DAKIN. From the entry note on the christening of Mary, I believe the marriage, if it took place at all, would have been after 1790.
  • Marriage of Daughter: Her child Mary Larn was married on 5 July 1810 in Lowestoft, Suffolk, England.4
  • Marriage of Daughter: Her child Sarah Larn was married on 9 June 1811 in Great Yarmouth, England.5,6
  • Marriage of Son: Her child James Larn was married on 20 October 1818 in Great Yarmouth, England.1,7,8
  • (Widow) Death: In 1838 Elizabeth was left a widow by the death of James Larn; Informant is Esther Derry, Row 54.9,10
  • Death: Elizabeth died on 16 July 1840 in Row 109, Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, England, Certificate reads 90 year old widow of a fisherman. Present at her death was the same person, Esther DERRY of row 54, as was present when her husband James died 2 years earlier.9,11,12,10
  • Burial: She was buried on 20 July 1840 in Plot 111 St Nicholas' Church Old Cemetery, Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, England, Mistranscribed in freereg as aged 60. The entry in the handwritten book in the Yarmouth Library reads - 3rd L - This commences the south side to cemetery gates. See exhibit.
  • Death cause: Death was caused by old age.10

Secondary circumstances

  • Married Name: Her married name was Level.3
  • Married Name: Her married name was Larn.

Research Notes

  • Research note 01: My theories regarding Elizabeth LARN nee – the wife of James and the mother of Samuel 1784, Sarah 1789, Mary 1790, James 1793 and James 1795.
The parish register for the later births shows Elizabeth as nee DAKIN.
    * I have found 2 christening records for Sarah LEVEL with differing parents
Born 17th Jan 1789 christened 20th Jan 1789 named as Sarah LEVEL, father Samuel and mother Elizabeth DAKIN & born 18th Jan 1789 christened 8th Feb 1795, father James LARN and mother Elizabeth DAKIN. Her sister Mary LARNE was born 12th Sep 1790 and christened 17th Sep 1790, her father is James and her mother is named Elizabeth LOVEL a widow.I believe this means that as at 1790 James LARN and Elizabeth, the widow LOVEL nee DAKEN were not married
    * I found the LEVEL/DAKIN marriage in Yarmouth in 1774, proving Elizabeth's age as per her headstone and death certificate.
    * The headstones for James and Elizabeth as they were transcribed early in the 20th century shows that Elizabeth was about 20 years older than her husband, giving her a likely birth year of 1749. They stopped having children in 1795, which would make Elizabeth 46 at the time, a very likely age for menopause.
    * So – where are we? The christenings of Sarah and Mary are odd. Mary was born 2nd but christened 1st.
    * I think we should be looking for
         1. A death of a Samuel LEVEL in the same time frame, but leaning more towards 1784-1789, as he may or may not have fathered Sarah, and I believe almost certainly fathered Samuel in 1784.
         2. A birth or christening of a Samuel LEVEL 1784. This YOB matches his age at death and his age as shown on the 1861 census. (Note this person is not part of the database at the moment)
3, A Marriage between James LARN and the widow LEVEL 1789-1793. Sarah had a father named as Samuel in 1789, so, even if Samuel was already dead it surely must be impossible for there to have been any marriage between Elizabeth and James until after this christening.

    Notes
    * No LARN marriage found in the originals in Yarmouth for the whole of 1790.
I have done various searches within free reg, family search, Norfolk transcription archive and findmypast Suffolk burials for these 3 names, and I have not found anything ‘likely’
    * Free reg does not have the Yarmouth 1790 indexed
    * I have standardized the spelling of the names, and I am ONLY addressing here my theories on Elizabeth. There are other queries regarding some of the statements made below, and I am still working on them. For clarity of purpose, I am ignoring these queries within the data contained in this memo.
    * One observation – whilst trawling through the original registers on family search I noticed that some churches, 1 being Burgh Castle in Suffolk,(which is included in Norfolk as far as family search is concerned) have an inordinate number of marriages by license for people who are not from the parish. Often these people are widowed, and it looks to me as if it was not unusual for a couple to travel a short distance away from their usual residence to marry on the quiet..
  • Research note 03: A George DAKIN, the son of William and Sarah nee ALDRED was buried in Yarmouth in 1785. He was aged 64. In 1788 a Thomas LOVEL was buried - a married man aged 52.
