Locus Operandi

Research Notes

  • Research note 01: Not the James Baxter who was buried in Ipswich in 1839 aged 30. When we find out how old he was when he died we will be able to work out which of the 4 possible christenings was him. He is NOT buried in St Peter and St Paul, where his wife was later buried, as I have checked ALL the burials in that cemetery in the quarter and nobody matches up..3
  • Research note 02: His death would have been between 1825 the conception of last known child and 1841 when Phoebe was most likely a widow. She was listed as a widow in 1851, but 1841 census does not show marriage status. However, she was not living with James in 1841 and she was earning a living as a laundress. An outside chance is this death of a James BROCK that was recorded in free bmd - March qtr 1841 BROCK, James - Hoxne page 13/342. I checked and there was no James BROCK born close to this date so I have at least eliminated an infant death. Will be worth getting the certificate.
    * Another, less likely, option for his death is in the Oulten Workhouse, A James BAXTER aged 77 was buried in Oulton from the workhouse 8th Jan 1862. This James was listed in the Oulten Workhouse as an inmate in 1851. He was born in Barnaby Suffolk, but was shown as unmarried. This same person was shown in 1861 as being born in Hough Hill and unmarried. He does not show up in the burial index (NBI) for Hoxne
    * No James buried in St Peter and St Paul (where his wife is). The only adult James in NBI as buried in Suffolk between 1825 and 1851 not already discounted above are aged 62 in 1825 and 73 in 1832.
