Commemoration

His death was commemorated by an obituary in the an unknown place newspapers on 19 August 1930 Constable Roy Robert Chugg. Aged 35, stationed at Newtown, died suddenly in bed at his home yesterday morning. Constable Chugg served over four years In the Great War with the 8th Trench Mortar Battery as a bombardier. It is believed that he was gassed during this period. His parents live at Longford, and his grandfather was a pioneer in that district. He leaves a widow and a child only six months old. Deceased had a day off on Sunday, and it was about 9 o'clock yesterday morning that his wife noticed how changed he looked while still in bed. He died without speaking. Drs. T. G and W. Inglis Clark were called. The matter was reported to the. Coroner (Alderman G. Crosby Gilmore), who ordered a post mortem examination.

Military Career

Records show that Roy Richard Chugg served in the armed forces. Roy attested into the 3rd Light Horse 3rd August 1915. He was a 21 year old farm hand. His father was John Henry, of Longford. Roy had red hair and blue eyes.
* Roy spent time in Broadmeadows Army Camp, and left for the war 23rd November 1915.
* He served as a gunner in France for the whole of this time until wounded in action 4th May 1918. He was back with his unit 3 weeks later. He was retrained and promoted to bombardier.
* He returned to Australia in April 1919, per Runic
* He may have been hospitalised with VD, period 146 days. This was Sep 1918, so the very end of his 3-plus years of fighting.
