Background information on Norwich St Edmund, Norfolk, England, - In the 18th century wool manufacture was the main industry in Norwich. The area around St Edmunds was mostly large factories, so Martha and her family would have lived in a densely populated and unhygienic environment. The cloth they wove was damask and was highly decorative and patterned. Weaving was considered a highly skilled occupation, taking an apprenticeship of 7 years to master. The weaving was done at home, or in small family run workshops.
