Primary events

Secondary circumstances

  • Occupation: Clement was a shopkeeper in Norwich in 1804 and an Annuitant in 1851.
  • (executor_2) Will: Daniel Culling left a will on 30 October 1819 in which Clement Chittock was named as an executor.

Census details

  • In the census taken on the night of 6th June 1841 Clement was included in the household of Joshua John Blake in East Poringland, Norfolk, England along with Hannah Goldsmith, Ann Chittock, Jabez Chittock, Sarah Culling, Clement Chittock, William Goldsmith, Charlotte (?), William Goldsmith, John Goldsmith, Emma Goldsmith, Lucy Goldsmith, William Blake, Joshua Chittock, Ellis Chittock and Louisa Lake. He was aged 75 years.. With Joshua (65) Sarah (55) Clement (30) and Clement (75) CHITTOCK. Louisa LAKE is the family servant and is the daughter of Jesse who is also in Poringland with his wife and family. There was a family of GOLDSMITH'S next door and as members of the CHITTOCK family married into the GOLDSMITHs I am listing this as one 'family'. On the other side was Ellis and his family and again I have included them as the one larger family.
  • In the census taken on the night of 30th March 1851 Clement was the head of the household. The address was Duke Street, Norwich St Michael Coslany, Norfolk, England., along with Sarah Norton and Ann Easton his son's wife and his son's mother-in-law. Ann's husband is also in Norwich, but at a different address. Note that Clement GOLDSMITH is named as Clement CHITTOCK's son.

Research Notes

  • Research note 01: Clement was named as an executor of a will. Partial transcription, or really just a summary of those points that matter to CHITTOCK researchers, of William CALLUM's will in which he made Clement CHITTOCK of Saxlingham one of his executors.
    * The will is easily read, and the scans have been saved as cullum william will 1811 in my genealogy/wills directory.
    * William CALLUM was a yeoman living in Saxlingham Norfolk at the time he made the will. Clement was a shopkeeper of Saxlingham. A John LAWTER of Waybread, Suffolk, a common carrier, was the other. John is his son-in-law.
    * William instructed his executor to sell everything and to apportion the results between his five children and his granddaughter. Hannah the wife of John LAWTER, Mary the wife of John PODD of Hintlesham, Charlotte the wife of John CULLYER, Sarah the wife of Thomas MEEK of Waybread, Elizabeth CULLUM and Sarah CULLUM the daughter of his son William CULLUM late of Hales (deceased). Shares are all equal.
    * William notes that he has already advanced John CULLYER husband of Charlotte his daughter the sum if 13 pounds 12 shillings, and to Thomas MEEK the husband of his daughter Sarah the sum of 4 pounds 3 shillings and 6 pence, and to John LAWTER, husband of Hannah 13 pounds 5 shillings, and to Elizabeth CULLUM his daughter 7 pounds, and to William CULLUM his son now deceased 5 pounds 10 shillings. All These sums to be deducted from their respective shares, and in the case of the deceased William his daughter Sarah's share. Sarah's share to be kept for her until she attains 21 years of age.
    * He also left to Mary CULLUM the widow of William and the mother of Sarah, access to the interest of the principal of her daughter's share until such time as she draws it down. If Sarah dies before she is 21, then her share goes to the 5 children of William as already listed.
    * The will was made in 3rd September 1805, and was proved in 13th April 1811.
    * There is nothing here to indicate a relationship between William CALLUM and Clement CHITTOCK but it does show that a Clement was a shopkeeper in Saxlingham in 1805.
  • Research note 02: The death in 1851 recorded in the Parish Register does not appear in Freebmd or findmypast. The only Clement CHITTOCK death in free bmd in Norfolk is in 1860. There are no Clement anything deaths in Norwich for the quarter and there are no Clement anything that looks likely anywhere in England. See exhibit, there is nothing out of the ordinary with the Parish Register entry, so no clues as to why the death registration did not get indexed.
  • Research note 03: Possibly related to the Clement CHITTOCK and Elizabeth PALMER who married 5/10/1733 in St Mary the Virgin Pulham. This couple had the following children all in Pulham
    - Mary christened 10/10/1734 - d 26/11/1734
    - Margaret christened 12/11/1735
    - Mary christened 7/6/1738 d 15/5/1739
    - Martha christened 6/8/1740
    * An Ellis and Mary CHITTOCK were having children in the same place at the same time as this couple.
    * Saxlingham is only about 8 miles from Pulham..6
  • Research note 04: Boyds marriages available through GSV book computer.
  • Research note 05: 1851 census musings * Clement was listed as the father of Clement Goldsmith, and as unmarried. Full transcription is
Duke Street Norwich St Michael at Coslany,
    * Clement GOLDSMITH head aged 33 (cannot read doc) Saxlingham
Sarah GOLDSMITH wife aged 35 Tailoress Lynn
    * Clement CHITTOCK father unmarried aged 85 Annuitant Saxlingham - Ann NORTON mother-in-law Married aged 72 Tailoress Sudbury Essex.
    * One option is that Clement CHITTOCK fathered Clement GOLDSMITH without marrying his mother. Unfortunately, he was born in Saxlingham. It is interesting to note that Clement GOLDSMITH was living in the Duke Street house in 1861 even though Clement CHITTOCK died 10 years prior..
  • Research note 06: I believe that this Clement is the same person as #32635. Making William the '2 unknown CHITTOCK'.
