Military Career

Records show that Herbert Walter Austin served in the armed forces. He joined up in Sep 1915, was served in France, and was in Alexandria. He started as a sapper, and ended up a 2nd Lieutenant. He was wounded in action (GSW to the face) in Belgium. In November 1917 he was awarded the Military Medal, and did not return to AU until August 1919.

He had measels in 1915, hospitalised in Abbasia.

  • Research note 01: In 1934, in the Advocate newspaper, there is a notice to say Herbert Walter AUSTIN died 14th April 1929 in Hobart, leaving £3,304 to his widow. He was an Estate Agent. HIs obit in an earlier paper names his wife as Mary S, who was living in 64 Main Street Moonah.
