Research Notes

  • Research note 01: Result of a look up request for Norfolk Directories

Quite a few BLAKES mentioned ranging from builders merchants to the likes of consuls, solicitors and surgeons.

No Blake butchers in Yarmouth in 1916, there was a Samuel BLAKE, butcher, Mulbarton, Norwich, and in Yarmouth there was a Herbert George BLAKE who
hired out apartments at 90 Nelson Road. (I'm not sure if that is where the apartments were, where he lived or both).

In 1933 there is a Herbt. BLAKE listed as a butcher at 150 Nelson Road Central, Great Yarmouth. (That is close to the aforementioned apartments, is
it the same person?). The previously mentioned Samuel was still listed as a butcher in Mulbarton.

    Hope this helps

  • Research note 02: May have witnessed a marriage between Frederick LARKE and Charlotte Anna SMITH (nee WEBB). The bride and groom were both widowed.10
Background information on Caister-on-sea, Norfolk, England, - It is a large and widely scattered parish 2 miles north of Yarmouth. The name comes from the Castle (or fort really) erected by the Romans. This fort was build around 200 ad and was used by the Roman troops for 200 years. The purpose of the fort is not easily understood now that the river and coast line have changed. The fort used to stand at the entrance of an estuary formed where the rivers Ant, Bure Yare and Waverney entered the sea. The estuary was navigable all the way to Norwich, which had a roman settlement named Caister-by-Norwich. 25 miles of water stood between it and Caister-on-sea (not called that then, but it should have been). The estuary silted up and it is where Yarmouth now stands.
* Caister Castle, which was moated and castellated, was built by Sir John Fastolff in 1432, who was born in Caister in 1378. The Castle was in ruins in 1865 (Kelly's Directory). It has been restored somewhat now and it houses a museum and a restaurant. The PASTON letters were written there.
