Primary events

Secondary circumstances

  • Note: Married in 1895 when his father (or step-father - see notes regarding Robert Martin BROWN) was 56, 36 years after father joined the army in Coventry and 24 years after father was discharged from army in Hobart.
  • Occupation: Robert was a cab driver and a labourer in 1895, and believed to have had some connection to a butcher's shop with Foster and Nelson.
    Also a publican.2
  • Residence: In 1895 Robert and Mary lived in Esk Street, Launceston, Tasmania, Australia.
  • Residence: In 1897 Robert and Mary lived in Cimitire Street, Launceston, Tasmania, Australia.
  • Residence: In circa 1898 Robert and Mary lived in Olive Street, Hobart, Tasmania, Australia.
  • Residence: In 1906 Robert lived in Bath Arms Hotel, Balaclava Street, Hobart, Tasmania, Australia. The premises were owned by James Boag, and were quite substantial, being valued at £1,300 for rates.
  • Anecdote: On Jan 22nd 1916 Robert was part of a delegation formed from members of the Master Butcher's Association to the Premier of Tasmania. This was reported in the Mercury, but none of his words, if he did indeed say anything, were reported.8
  • Anecdote: On 27th Jan 1916 Robert placed an ad in the Mercury - Wanted - young man as orderman, R WALPOLE, Butcher. He advertised again 6th June 1916 - WANTED - Young Man to ride for orders. R. Walpole, Butcher. On 27th June Robert was advertising for a butcher.8
  • Anecdote: IN March 1916 Robert was again a member of a delegation this time complaining about the regulations of butchers. The report appears in the Mercury.

Some aspects of Robert Walpole's life. Just before 1906 Robert was the licencee of the All Year Round Horel in Launceston. Back in 1878 James BOAG the elder, who founded Boags Brewery in 1883 with his son of the same name, held the licence.

Research Notes

  • Research note 01: We have confirmation of Robert's death date from his will and his age as quoted on his headstone. This makes his birth year 1871. I have a birth date of 24/4/1873 and Ann has 23/4/1871. The marriage of James and Margaret was in 1875, so in either case it was after the birth of Robert. James first wife did not die until after Robert was born to Margaret, so I doubt we will ever be able to find out for sure if James fathered Robert.
  • Research note 02: * In 1906 he was running the Bath Arms Hotel, and before that, he had the license for the All the Year Round Hotel in Launceston. The 1906 Gazette shows the License being transferred to another person in January of that year, and Robert getting the license for the Inveresk Hotel in Launceston in May.
    * I have found a butcher's shop owned by Foster and Nelson in 81 Elizabeth Street, Hobart in 1948..
  • Research note 03: General note regarding my 'methodology' where natural fathers and step-fathers are concerned. I believe that 'who brings you up' is of equal importantance in relation to family history as the genes in genealogy. Therefore I plan to record the step familes as well as the natural familes (where proven) in my database..

Children of Robert Walpole and Mary Ann Wilkins
