Research Notes

  • Research note 01: May have married Ann GARDENER 8th July 1783.
  • Research note 02: a number of John CANHAMs had deaths registered in Reg Dist of Ely in this period, but there are only 2 who were buried in Littleport. One in 1843 aged 50 (too young to be ours) and the other in 1846 aged 86 (therefore born around 1760). A John CANHAM was chr in Littleport 9th July 1761, parents William and Hannah CANHAM..
  • Research note 03: John is the only CANHAM married in Fincham in the IGI so we should assume he was born elsewhere, but there are a number of SPINKS around this date, so the most likely thing is that Ann's family were at least living there at the time of her marriage, but we should look at all the births if we can find any. The IGI do not have the christenings for this parish..
  • Research note 04: In Upwell 1881 census there were no CANHAMS, and just 1 family of SPINKS..
  • Research note 05: There are 2 possibilities for his death - one John born 1793, buried in Littleport 1843 aged 50, and John born 1860 buried in Littleport 1846 aged 86. Even though it seems improbable, I believe that he is actually the older one, as the younger one was with Mary born 1791 in Cambridgeshire with 3 people who may be their children John b 1821, Jacob b1826 and Sarah b1826 9 DOB rounded down. Possibly the older one had a previous wife, and the younger one was his son from that previous marriage. All appear on the same census page.
  • Research note 06: I believe I have found the marriage - in Fincham. John (parish recorded as Upwell) married Ann SPINKS 2nd Dec 1800 St Martin with St Michael Prs. Fincham is about 14 miles from Upwell..
Background information on Upwell, Norfolk, England, - IN 1861 census there was NO parish of Upwell in Norfolk. It is near the boarder with Cambridge, so it is possible that is was included in that county. In 1881 some of it was in Norfolk, other parts in Cambridgeshire.

This John is most likely not the one who was christened (LDS member submission) in Littleport 9th October 1768 in Littleport, as there is a death of John as an infant?. Father John and Mother Susanna WARNER.

He could be the John aged 75 in the census above. John aged 86 (therefore DOB c1755) was buried in St George's Churchyard, Littleport 17th September 1846. There is a christened in IGI 9th July 1761, Father William and Mother Hannah (both of these names have been used by our John for his children). In 6th Jan 1756 William CANHAM married Hannah FLETCHER in Littleport.
