Military Career

Records show that Frederick A Allen served in the armed forces. In 18th March 1886, Frederick attested into the 4th (Queen's Own) Hussars. He claimed to be 18 years and 4 months old, with the occupation of Labourer. He was born in Great Yarmouth, and his father was Robert. He had previously served in the 1st Norfolk Artillery Volunteers. He signed on for 12 years, and served out this time to the day. He was promoted through the ranks to Corporal by 1893, a rank he still held when discharged in 1898. He did not serve overseas, but did spend time in Ireland. His father was Robert ALLEN.2

Research Notes

  • Research note 02: In 1907 there was a Frederick ALLEN who lived in Stanstead Sq Great Yarmouth, who was eligible to vote in London - qualifying by having a freehold property 'The Ship Tavern' in Talbot Court, City of London. In 1901 same man was eligble to vote for the same reason, but his home address was Wellesley Road, Great Yarmouth. I have been able to confirm he is NOT our man, as this chap was in Wellesley Road in 1901 census, a retired wine merchant from Bradford..
