Census details

  • In the census taken on the night of 6th June 1841 Ann was included in the household of Nicholas Passmore in Combe Martin, Devon, England along with John Passmore, Harriett Passmore, Nicholas Passmore, William Passmore, James Passmore and Agnes Berry. She was aged 32 years.. Nicholas PASSMORE aged 35 who was with 5 children aged 10 to 1, but there was no wife. Agnes aged 65 and her daughter Ann aged 30 were listed as part of the same household, but note that no relationships were listed. Everyone in the house was born in Devon, and the only person with an occupation is Nicholas who was an agricultural labourer.
  • In 1841 in Combe Martin Ann Berry was included in the household of Agnes and Ann were listed as BERRY, and at the end of the list that started with Nicholas. The intervening 3 children, all named PASSMORE were aged from 10 down to 1.
  • In the census taken on the night of 30th March 1851, Ann was the wife of the head of the household, Nicholas. The address was Woolsamlands, Combe Martin, Devon, England. Their children Harriett, William and Richard were living with them, along with Ann's mother, Agnes Berry. Nicholas PASSMORE a widowed agricultural labourer. Agnes is claiming to be a widow (but note I have not seen the original census, only the transcription). Ann her illigitimate daughter is with her, as is a Richard BERRY aged 4 born in Combmartin, all listed as lodgers. I have shown Ann as the 'de facto' wife of Nicholas as I believe he fathered some of her children, but this may be incorrect.
  • In the census taken on the night of 7th April 1861 Ann Berry was the wife of the head of the household, Nicholas Passmore. The address was Chittlehampton Town, Barnstaple, Combe Martin, Devon, England. Nicholas PASSMORE a widowed agricultural labourer and his son Richard, who is a tailor, and unmarried. Their son Richard was living with them, This is the same head of the household who Agnes and Ann were with in 1851. Ann is the family servant, and Richard is now named Richard PASSMORE, so we should assume that Richard is the son of Ann and Nicholas, and they were not married. Note that Richard and Nicholas are incorrectly transcribed as TRAPMORE. Richard is a patient in the North Devon Infirmary in 1871.
  • Ann Berry appeared on the census taken on the night of 2nd April 1871, at Combe Martin, England, in the household of Nicholas Passmore.
  • In the census taken on the night of 3rd April 1881, Ann was the wife of the head of the household, an unknown person . The address was Combe Martin, England. On her own as a single pauper.
