Primary events

Secondary circumstances

  • Occupation: Ellis was a tailor.
  • tax: He was included in taxation records in Lombard Street, Chelsea, Greater London, England, between 1798 and 1810. The owner of the property may be Hans SLOANE of Hounslow - refer to the exhibit. Later the owner is shown as 'the lord of the manor'. In the earlier years, both Ellis (Senior) and his son Ellis (Junior) were taxed at the same rate - 9 shillings and 3 farthings. The fact that they are deemed Senior and Junior, I believe we can now say the Unknown 2 CHITTOCK is actually Ellis Senior, but I will hold off merging the 2 identities, and it is impossible to reverse the procedure.
  • Residence: In 1811 Ellis lived in 69 Paradise Road, Chelsea, Greater London, England. Ellis CHITTOCK tailor.8
  • tax: He was included in taxation records in Paradise Row, Chelsea, Greater London, England, between 1811 and 1832.

Research Notes

  • Research note 01: There were 2 Ellis CHITTOCKs buried in St Luke's Chelsea in 1856. One was born in1769 (buried 12th April 1856) and the other 1841 (buried 1st or 19th August 1856). They were living in Queen's Road West when they died and the grave is 'in the old part' and the marker is 'flat'. The official registrations are in Chelsea Jun qtr 1a/8 and Sep qtr 1a/92. In the post office directories of London, there was an Ellis CHITTOCK and sons, tailors living in 69 Queens Road west.
  • Research note 02: I originally had Ellis as the child of Ellis and Ann nee POTTER, but a careful reading of the elder Ellis' will shows that Ellis of Paradise Lane was his nephew and not his son. The will already mentions the children of the elder Ellis' brother William, and seeing as Ellis omits to mention the father of Ellis of Paradise Lane's father I am going to assume he is the illegitimate child of Mary - the Elder Eliss' sisters..
  • Research note 03: Another Ellis CHITTOCK was buried in St Luke's 27th November 1835. He was aged 2 years and 5 months, and was living in Paradise Row at the time of his death. There were 9 burials in St Luke's on the day, 8 of them were children. His grave marker is also in the old part.
  • Research note 04: There are 2 brothers - Ellis CHITTOCK who lived in Chelsea London (DIED 1804) and Clement who lived in Canterbury Kent (DIED c 1816). I have the wills, and there is reference in Clement's to family in Saxlingham. The will needs transcribing..
  • Research note 05: * I believe Clement married Ann READ 28th April or 1st May 1786. They were both widows.
  • Research note 06: In the same grave as Ellis and his wife Ann is a niece, Martha JONES, wife of John, and her daughter. In 1810 Martha was 38, and the child was 7 months old in 1808.
