Census details

Some aspects of Francis Burnett's life. Francis is possibly the son of Francis BURNETT and Elizabeth TOWER, born 7th May 1831 and Chr in New Machar 3rd June in the same year.

Other children of this couple are: Ann Garden 1827 in Old Machar, John b 1828 in New machar, James b 1835 in New Machar (Chr in Old Deer), Peter b 1837 in New machar

The marriage was recorded in Old and New Machar 23rd and 28th April 1826.

The newspaper report of the marriage says At Aberdeen, Francis BURNETT esq., son of the late John BURNETT, Esq of Elrick, to Elizabeth TOWER, third daughter of the late James TOWER, Esq., of the Island of St Thomas.

One child above was Ann Garden BURNETT. She was found with her aunt Margaret FARQUHARSON, a landed proprietor, in 1851. Ann was an annuitant aged 23, and they had 3 staff. In 1841 she, aged 15, was with Peter BURNETT aged 18 (her brother? but the wrong age).

The Margaret FARQUHARSON above left a will in 1857. She was nee GARDEN and was the widow of William, of Monaltrie.

Francis (husband of Elizabeth TOWER) was Chr 5th May 1796, the son of John BURNETT and Helen GARDEN in New machar.

Other children of John and Helen nee GARDEN are: Hay BURNETT Chr 1799 in Mew Machar, Andrew Chr 1794, William Chr 1801, Peter Chr 1792, David Chr 1804, all New machar. John (husband of Helen) may have been in the 6rh Regiment of Foot, being promoted from Lieut. to Captain-Lieut. in 1782. No marriage appears in the Scottish records for John and Helen.

An educated guess at Johns parents are John BURNETT and Mary HAY, with a Chr 25th September 1770 in Keith Banff. They married In Keith 1st May 1768.

Other Children of John and Mary nee HAY are: James Chr 1772, Jean Chr 1768, William 1774

John (husband of Mary HAY) may be the child Chr in Grange in 1738, son of John BURNEY and Katherine CAMERON.

In Summary the BURNETT family were in the vicinity of Elrick House and Elrick Burn, but I have NOT tried line into the Francis BURNETT who owned the house, and who lived in Italy 'for his health'. As the Francis who married Juliet seemed to be an important social or financial link in Old and New Machar, he may have been a distant cousin?7

Research Notes

  • Research note 01: No Julie Burnett in the 1861 census. No record of a death 1855-1861 (no way to check 1851-1855 yet). Julie/Francis marriage cert does not show ages. There is a marriage recorded in 1860 between a 66-year-old Francis Burnett and a 45-year-old Mary Scott. Both are recorded as never having been married but there is a pile of children living with them in the 1861 census..

  6. Census data as per CD, This is most likely the correct Francis Burnett. Note the 'neice' Mary A. Grant. No real proof though.
