Military Career

Records show that Charles Coe served in the armed forces. Joined the AIF in 1915, when 20 years old. He was discharged, with the rank of Colour Sergent, in 1916 as medically unfit (not due to misconduct). Even though Charles named his mother as his NOK, his father signed a letter giving his consent to Charles (his son) joining up.

The papers have (unclear) notes regarding Charles' mental derangement. They say that he was unbalanced due to fear of C.S.M. (see exhibit). He was confined to New Norfolk mental Hospital for a few months. The form says that it was due to active service (but he never left Australia as far as I can see) and that it was also due to excessive strain of work. When released, he was considered completely well, so his disability and subsequent hospitalization in new Norfolk must have come shortly after he joined the army. I don't think he ever got out of training camp. Dates show he was under treatment from 1st September 1915, and his date of attestation was the same day. He had previous military experience (even though only 20). he had been in the 93rd Infantry Co for 3 years, and had been a Corporal, Sergeant and a Lieut.

Research Notes

  • Research note 01: It appears that Lorraine and Charles did not live together for long. They married in 1928, and were at separate addresses by 1936. Neither remarried, so they may never have divorced.
