Census details

Some aspects of John Barnabas Blake's life. John Barnabas BLAKE was a successful draper in Yarmouth. In 1828, Row 49 was known as Blake the Linen Draper's Row. The shop fronted the Market Place at one end of the Row. He had a large family, most of whom were also successful at what they did.

One son, John Garson, became a draper (with a large store) in Hampshire.

Another, Garson, started out as a bank cashier and ended up owning a fleet of ships that carried (among other things) coal he sold. He obviously believed in end-to-end control of the supply chain, as he was also a fire and marine insurance agent. He left £3000 in 1878.

Joseph Starling spent most of his life as a linen draper in Hampshire. He left over £3.300

William was an accountant who died a bachelor at the age of 40, leaving about £1,000

The girls who married, married well. Harriet's husband was an agent for a hemp and tar merchant and Rebecca's husband, a draper and undertaker, left over £3,900

This family were 'dissenters' and were very involved in the local politics of both their church and of Yarmouth in general. There are many mentions of their political activities, their donations and of their business and social sporting activities in the local papers for many years.

John was in Yarmouth when he married Harriet GARSON in 1808. He was the grandson of Barnabas BLAKE a baker in Bocking, Essex. Barnabas the grandfather was in the Fleet prison for debt in 1761

So the family went from a bankrupt Essex Baker to a successful draper in 2 generations. The successful draper went on to found a very successful family. Successful in the commercial sense, in the social sense and in the civic duty sense.

John Barnabas' brother Barnabas Benjamin was a draper in Kent c1858. He had 16 children, as yet unresearched. Who knows what we will find.
