Census details

Some aspects of Philip Robert Beales's life. The Bigamy - Bury Free Press, 10th May 1884, reported that Philip married Mahalah whilst his former wife was still alive. First marriage took place in Yarmouth 22nd January 1871. Statements in the court were to the effect that first marriage had only lasted a couple of years, and was not happy. Philip left for America in 1873 (which is why I can't find the bugger in the census no doubt), but sent his wife 10 shillings per week. When he returned to Yarmouth, he settled £30 upon her, in lieu of the weekly payments. Forst wife was living with another man, and had had a child with him.

The second marriage, also in Yarmouth, was done openly, and the prosecution was brought by the first wife, who must have been livig in Yarmouth at the time. Philip claimed to be a widower at the time of this second marriage. The prosecutor stated that Philip took Mahalah to America with him, living as man and wife all the time. After the return to Yarmouth and before the second marriage, Philip often saw his first wife, so was well aware she was alive and well. Philip was found guilty and given 1 weeks imprisonment.

Philip married Amelia Rebecca GOWING in March qtr 1871, and was with her in 1871 census. Address was 7 Row 87, and there were 2 children with them Elizabeth and Thomas aged 8 and 6. The family name of the children starts with G, but is otherwise unreadable.

In 1881 Amelia was living with James WOODROW a boarder and Elizabeth STOLWORTHY, a married daughter aged 19. An Elizabeth GOWING married William STOLWORTHY in Yarmouth 1880, so this confirms the children, born well before the marriage, were registered in the mother's maiden name. In 1891 she was wuth the same boarder.
Brushes with the LAW

On 27th October 1886, Philip was tried and found not guilty of maliciously wounding his wife Mahalah. With a table knife - in Great Yarmouth. The record also says he was imprisoned for 1 week in Ipswich 5th May 1884 for bigamy.

It appears that things just got worse, as the Ipswich Journal of 28th December 1888, reports that Philip was attacked by his step son with a iron saucepan - in the kitchen. Said saucepan was being used to boil eggs just prior to becoming a weapon. Said eggs were one of the catalysts of the arguement, as step father thought step son was better off then he, as he could afford eggs for breakfast. Another point of contention was step son staying out late.

It was noted (hilarisouly so, when you consider the 1884 bigamy and the 1886 wounding) that 'he did not live comfortably with his wife', and that his wife encouraged his step son to ill treat him.

The step son was William CRUTCHFIELD.7
