  • Anecdote: William Cato married Rosetta Coggin and lived in a house on Kemble property. The Rev Coggin was a Pres. Chaplin on the convict ships. I have his watch a gigantic silver affair with the initials W.C. He told me it had crossed the equator 11 time.17

His life was recorded thus ~~ William CATO was born on 12 November 1819, the eldest child of Joseph and Frances CATO, and was christened at the China Terrace Wesleyan Church, Lambeth, Surrey, England.
William arrived in Hobart, Tasmania, with his parents, on 29 November 1832 on the 'JOHN CRAIG'.
William CATO married Rosetta COGGIN on 3 December 1850 at the Melville Street Chapel, Hobart. The witnesses were William CATO, Joseph CATO, William COGGIN and Ann GOULD.
Rosetta COGGIN was born in 1823 at Brixton, London the daughter of William and Rosetta (nee GURNEY) COGGIN. William COGGIN was a chaplain on convict ships.
William and Rosetta CATO had six sons and four daughters:
William, for the registration of the birth of his children, was referred to as a Gardener, Market Gardener or Nurseryman.
William CATO died on 7 October 1894, aged 75 years in Hobart, Tasmania. He was recorded as an Orchardist and died of Asthma. William was buried at the Cornelian Bay Cemetery, Hobart.
Rosetta moved to New Zealand about 1898 and lived for some time with her daughter, Emma at Mein Street, Wellington and about 1911 moved to live with her daughter Constance at Taita, Lower Hutt.
Rosetta CATO died on 23 April 1912, aged 88 years at Taita, Lower Hutt, New Zealand. She was recorded as a widow and died from Cancer of the Kidneys. She was buried on 25 April 1912 at the Taita Cemetery, Lower Hutt, New Zealand.

His death was commemorated by an obituary in the Hobart newspapers on 9 October 1894 in The Mercury, Tasmania, Australia, Refer to newspaper article.21,22
