Census details

Some aspects of Garson Henry Lovewell Blake :possibly Garson Edric JOHNSON's (later Geoffrey JACKSON) natural father?'s life. The link between Garson Edric JOHNSON (who became Geoffrey Earle JACKSON later in life) is not proven. There are pointers and hints from the names, and from Louisa's actions in keeping the newspaper of Garson's marriage from 1896 until 1949, and the fact that Louisa (a barmaid with 3 illegitimate children in 1901) became a substantial property owner by about 1915. I have made the link only to show the possibility and to include Garson BLAKE into the database in the hope that others researching this BLAKE family will it stumble across it. Our 'family story' includes the 'fact' that Louisa's children were fathered by a solicitor who lived and worked on South Quay. Louisa was said to be his housekeeper. Other aspects of the family story have turned out to be substantially correct. See Louisa's details.

Commemoration

His death was commemorated by an obituary in the Great Yarmouth newspapers in 1927 in Norfolk, England, DEATH OF ALDERMAN GARSON HENRY LOVEWELL BLAKE.

Just as we were going to press we received the sad news that Alderman G. H. Lovewell Blake had passed away. The deceased gentleman was one of our best known townsmen having been for many years associated with public work in the town. He will be well remembered for the work he carried out in the earlier days of sport, when he was hon. secretary of the old Amusements Committee, and at one time was a familiar figure on the cycle racing track, and as a starter and timekeeper at the athletic sports meetings held on the Recreation Ground in the old days. He also at one time held a commission in the 2nd Volunteer Battalion Norfolk Regt., and resumed his military activities during the war with the local Volunteer Training Corps. Earlier still he was a keen yachting man and was connected with the Burgh water frolic and the marine regatta. His more recent-public work has been as a member of the Town Council, on which he sat for many years as a member for St. Georges Ward, and later St. Nicholas Ward, whilst he was the most recently appointed Alderman on that body. His most prominent work in connection with the Council was as chairman of the Piers Committee, in which he took great interest, and was a popular figure at all the events held at the Wellington Gardens and in this connection will be much missed. As chairman of the Board of Guardians over a very long period, Mr. Blake, by his knowledge of the Poor Law, did much good work whilst his unfailing courtesy and scrupulous fairness in the chair earned for him the esteem and appreciation of those who sat with him on that board. Mr. Blake was a solicitor by profession, being for some time in partnership with the late Mr. Fred Danby Palmer, with whom he was articled, and upon that gentleman’s death he continued the practice. He was also Registrar of the Lowestoft County Court. Mr. Blake had been ailing for some time, but the end came somewhat unexpectedly late last night. He leaves a widow, two daughters and one son, to whom we tender our heartfelt sympathy. He was a son of late Mr. Lovewell Blake, who carried on a large practice as an accountant on the South Quay, and was 61 years of age.
