Brushes with the LAW

In 1846 he was a witness in the trial of Sarah HASTINGS, who was arraigned for uttering a forged warrant with the intent of defrauding Gurney's Bank of £85. This money was deposited by her husband William was a clerk at the bank and attested to the fact that Sarah had presented a document on which she had forged her (now dead) husband's signature. Not that good a forgery, as she had signed it Mr John Miller Hastings. William spotted that nobody signs documents using their title, but had paid out the money anyway. Later evidence by others say that John could write, but only 'just', and that the signature was not his.

William was the only person who stated Sarah was the person who presented the Document 2 years earlier, but there was nobody to say she did NOT. She was found guilty, and sentenced to 12 calender months ion the House of Correction, and was told she was lucky as the law had only recently changed from death being the sentence for such a crime!!

Sarah and John (a grocer) were together in 1841 census of Yarmouth, living in Gaol Street. They were both 45. John died in Yarmouth in Mar qtr 1846. Sarah BOWLES and John HASTINGS junior were married in Yarmouth in 1835. No sign of Sarah in later censuses.4
