Military Career

Records show that Onley George Benjamin Beck served in the armed forces. Onley enlisted in 1915 in Norfolk. He started in the Norfolk Regiment, and transferred to the Border Regiment. He was killed in France, a Private, in October 1916, having spent almost 12 months in France without a break. He is buried in the Stump Road Cemetery, Grandcourt France, and was in the 8th Battalion at the time if his death. This Battalion landed at Bolounge 27th September 1915.   • 1916, In action - The 8th Battalion attacked Stuff and Regina Redoubts at 6.am. on the 19th October taking their objectives capturing 731 of the enemy including 5 enemy officers, at a cost of 162 casualties, including Capt Miller and Capt Watson-Thomas and 18 O.R. killed and 30 men missing. The Divisional sector ran from the River Lys to Hill 63.
