Research Notes

  • Research note 01: There were a number of Harriet BLAKEs born in and around Portsea at this time. A Harriet G BLAKE was at a boarding school in Leicestershire in 1861, and was living as one of 2 companions to a 62-year-old widow in St Marylebone in 1871. Then, in 1881 in Alverstoke, she was a schoolmistress, living alone with 1 servant in 1881. Harriet Garland BLAKE married Henry H PINCHES in Croydon Jun 1886, and appeared with him in 1891. He was a teacher of music aged 27, some 17 years younger than Harriet was. In 1901, Harriet had only aged 1 year according to the census, and Henry was a Professor of music. They were living in Lambeth. Harriet Garland PICHES died in 1 Pathfield Cottages, St Cleer Liskeard, Cornwall 14th Jan 1937 at the age of 90. Her husband was still alive, and she left him in charge of her estate, which was valued at £141. I do not know if this Harriet is the daughter of Joseph or not..
